The Bank of Ghana reported that the external debt was GH¢305.0 billion, or around 21.8% of GDP, while the domestic debt was GH¢323.7 billion, or roughly 23.1% of GDP.
The anticipated coupon payment obligations of the government on both tendered and untendered bonds in February and August 2025 were cited by the Central Bank as the reason for the rise in domestic borrowings, which led to increased borrowings to create a buffer.
At the end of July 2025, the total amount of governmental debt was GH¢628.8 billion, or 44.9% of GDP.
