No government in the Fourth Republic – indeed, in the entire history of Ghana – has faced a global storm like Akufo-Addo did between 2020 and 2023.
COVID-19.
Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The world’s livelihood collapsed in hours.
The cost of a cargo flight quadrupled.
A 20-foot shipping container jumped from $2,000 to $8,000.
Health systems in the most advanced nations buckled.
Global industry shut down.
Here, Akufo-Addo stood firm. He refused to let his people die. He tasked his Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to throw every template of fiscal prudence to the wind and spend to save Ghanaian lives.
He did.
Lives were saved.
Our COVID death rate was among the lowest in the world.
Akufo-Addo was praised across continents for a single, defining statement:
“We know how to bring an ailing economy back to life. What we do not know, however, is how to bring back the dead.”
World leaders quoted him. They praised an African leader for a clarity they least expected from the so-called dark continent.
But the aftermath of COVID and war brought hardship. That hardship is the cost of refusing to let your people die. It is the bill for life, presented in the currency of economic pain.
And now, today, Ghanaians applaud a lazy leader who blew his first term – a term without global catastrophe – and who inherited, in his second, an IMF-guided economy already in recovery by December 2024. They contrast this man with the fighter, Akufo-Addo, and call it progress. “Unprecedented growth”?
What does that make us?
A people with no memory. Zero morals. Profound hypocrisy.
A nation that praises the man who wasted a clear opportunity and curses the one who spent to save them.
The DDEP is the reason you are alive today. Get some sense, Mr. analyst. Now.
Always pray for Akufo-Addo.
Pray for his team.
Say even more prayers for his Finance Minister – the one you want to hang today.
Because of them, many of you talking trash now would otherwise be in your graves.
Pray for them.
Then look in the mirror and ask what you have become.
