“The Cabinet has approved the immediate payment of salaries to 6,500 nurses and midwives who have been working without pay since their recruitment,” said Health Minister Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
When the present government took office in January 2025, it inherited a backlog of over 13,500 nurses and midwives who had been placed without financial clearance, the Minister told reporters during a press event in Accra.
Mr. Akandoh claims that the salaries of 7,000 of these medical professionals have already been processed and paid, and that the remaining 6,500 will start receiving payments in November 2025 once the Cabinet has approved the release of cash.
He also disclosed that the Ministry of Health, working with the Ministry of Finance, has taken action to regularise the employment of more than 17,000 rotating health workers, 800 medical physicians, and 883 junior doctors who were previously employed without formal authorisation.
He pointed out that this action is a part of the government’s larger plan to boost healthcare worker motivation across the country and fortify Ghana’s healthcare workforce.
