The Committee that was established to look into petitions that identified Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo for alleged misconduct recommended that she be removed from office.

The action was made in compliance with Article 149(9) of the 1992 Constitution, according to a press release released by the presidency on Monday afternoon [September 1, 2025].

The committee’s findings were given Monday morning under the direction of Justice Gabriel Pwamang, a member of the Supreme Court bench.

In such cases, the President of Ghana is required to abide by the committee’s recommendations under Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.

“The President shall, in each case, act in accordance with the recommendations of the committee,” according to the aforementioned article.

Daniel Ofori, a citizen of Ghana, has petitioned the President to dismiss Justice Torkornoo due to his alleged misconduct as Chief Justice.

After four months of hearings, the committee concluded that the grounds for her asserted misconduct under Article 146(1) had been proven and suggested that she be removed from office.

The first head of the judiciary to be removed from office under the constitutional provision was Justice Torkonoo, who was named Chief Justice in 2023.

In May 2023, Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah retired, and she succeeded him.

After Justices Sophia Akuffo and Georgina Theodore Wood, she became the third female Chief Justice in Ghanaian history.

On Wednesday, June 7, 2023, Parliament approved the nomination of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
