The late gospel great Yaw Sarpong’s children have reacted to the increasing public calls for their father to be buried alongside his long-time colleague Tiwaa on the same day, after it was suggested that both figures should receive a state-sponsored combined funeral.

Some members of the Ghanaian public have recently suggested that it would be symbolic and appropriate for the two singers to be buried on the same day because they travelled together in ministry and music for many years.

According to many, they are national treasures whose influence on Ghanaian gospel music and spiritual life justifies a well-planned and respectful farewell.

The children of Yaw Sarpong responded to the suggestion on Angel FM, Kumasi, acknowledging the emotional significance of the request and the strong fondness Ghanaians have for both people.

According to the sons, “We have been notified that there is a call by Ghanaians that they are all national assets and that since they journeyed together, the government should give them a state-assisted burial so their funeral will be done together,”

They were cautious to stress, nevertheless, that such a choice cannot be made hastily or without consultation.

They clarified, “We, the children, cannot solely make such a decision, we have let the family make that decision.”

The kids said that there are still talks going on in the extended family and that they are receptive to ideas that might eventually commemorate their father’s legacy and memory.

“We think this is a good call,” they admitted, while expressing hope that whatever conclusion is reached will ensure that their father rests in peace.

Additionally, they accentuated the two gospel characters’ relationship, making it clear that they were close friends.

They reaffirmed the connection between the families by saying, “We all had a good relationship with Madam Tiwaa.”
