As part of the second National Sanitation Day exercise, which is set for Saturday, November 1, 2025, in the Accra metropolis, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to step up enforcement and monitoring efforts.
A statement released by the Assembly and signed by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs, states that disregarding the sanitation directive or refusing to take part in the communal labour exercise is a crime that, upon summary conviction, carries a fine of up to 100 penalty units, a minimum sentence of 30 days and a maximum sentence of 6 months in jail, or both. It further said that repeat violators will be subject to extra daily sanctions.
According to the statement, the activity is a part of the drive to make Accra cleaner, safer, and healthier as well as to encourage environmental cleaning and guarantee complete public involvement in the national campaign.
21 Public Health Officers, 200 members of the AMA Sanitation Taskforce, and 81 labourers, including sweepers and janitors, would be deployed to all sub-metropolitan areas for the operation, according to the statement. It also stated that logistics like compactor trucks, backhoe loaders, excavators, tipper trucks, and a pay loader would be used to help with the desilting of drains, the removal of trash, and the transportation of waste.
According to the statement, all stores, marketplaces, and commercial establishments must stay closed starting at 6:00 a.m. until the exercise is over in order to allow for full public participation, in accordance with the President’s order and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (Communal Labour) Bye-Laws, 2017, which were passed in accordance with Section 181 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
According to the statement, “The cleansing activities will focus on desilting of drains, brushing of road kerbs, sweeping, and removal of unauthorised banners.”
