The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that the schools of the top 10 girls who excelled in the Girls in ICT programme in the Volta Region will receive modern, fully equipped ICT laboratories by 2027.

The Minister said funding for the project has been approved, paving the way for the construction and equipping of the laboratories to improve digital education and strengthen technology skills among students.

According to Samuel Nartey George, the initiative will provide beneficiaries with better access to digital learning resources, encourage more girls to pursue careers in science and technology, and expand the impact of the government’s Girls in ICT programme.

He explained that the project forms part of broader efforts to promote digital literacy, empower young women and improve access to information and communication technology (ICT) education in Ghana.

Government Moves to Address Internet Connectivity Challenges

The Communications Minister also addressed internet connectivity challenges in parts of the Volta Region, attributing some disruptions to fibre-optic cable damage caused by ongoing road construction under the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme.

He disclosed that he had engaged the Minister responsible for Roads and Highways, alongside officials from both ministries, to develop measures to prevent further damage to telecommunications infrastructure.

The proposed solution includes improving coordination between road contractors and telecommunications companies to ensure fibre-optic cables are relocated before excavation and construction works begin.

The move is expected to minimise internet disruptions, protect telecommunications infrastructure and improve network reliability for residents and businesses.

Volta Region Targets Digital Growth and Investment

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, reaffirmed the Regional Coordinating Council’s commitment to working with the Communications Ministry to support the government’s vision of using digital technology to accelerate regional development.

He described the Volta Region as a promising destination for investors, emphasising that reliable internet connectivity is essential for business communication, digital services and efficient commercial transactions.

The planned ICT laboratories and efforts to improve internet infrastructure are expected to support digital education, create opportunities for young people and strengthen the region’s prospects for technology-driven economic growth.
