The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has paid a working visit to Volta Lake Transport Limited (VLTL) to inspect ongoing construction works for a new port aimed at complementing the existing facility.
The Volta Lake new port project is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s intermodal transport system, improve the movement of goods and passengers, and reduce congestion at the Port of Tema.
The initiative is also expected to enhance transportation links between Ghana and neighbouring landlocked countries, creating more efficient routes for regional trade and boosting economic activity.
During the visit, Minister Nikpe commended the management and staff of VLTL for their commitment and the significant progress made on the project. He urged the institution to maintain the current pace of work, noting that the successful completion of the projects would pave the way for their commissioning by President John Dramani Mahama.
Staff of Volta Lake Transport Limited expressed appreciation to the Minister for visiting the facility, describing his engagement as a historic moment. According to them, Hon. Nikpe is the first Transport Minister in about a decade to visit the facility and personally encourage workers to improve their efforts.
The staff further appealed to the Minister to communicate their dedication and achievements to President Mahama as they continue contributing to the development of Ghana’s inland water transport sector.
The Minister’s engagement highlights the government’s renewed focus on leveraging Volta Lake transportation to support trade, industry, logistics and national economic development.
Once completed, the new port is expected to create additional economic opportunities, improve cargo transportation, enhance passenger mobility and provide a safer, more reliable and efficient alternative for transporting goods across Ghana.
The Volta Lake port development is therefore expected to play an important role in Ghana’s transport infrastructure, regional trade and efforts to decongest major seaports while expanding the country’s inland transportation network.
