The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) President, Bessa Simons, revealed that the union’s leadership has formally asked the government to provide a state-assisted funeral for the late gospel legend Yaw Sarpong.
He states that given Yaw Sarpong’s enormous contribution to the expansion and advancement of Ghana’s music business, especially among the gospel community, the call is warranted.
He hailed the deceased singer as a trailblazer whose music continues to inspire generations of music lovers and whose ministry impacted innumerable lives.
Bessa Simons clarified on Showbiz 360 with Giovani Caleb on February 20 that although MUSIGA lacks the power to bestow state honours, it can formally ask the government to take such recognition for worthy music icons into consideration.
“It is only the President who can give the final approval, but we can propose to the government to give our music legends a state-assisted burial,” he said.
He disclosed that in order to guarantee that Yaw Sarpong receives the recognition that is proper for his position and legacy, the union has already begun action in that regard, including the relevant authorities.
The president of MUSIGA emphasised that state-sponsored funerals are more than just ceremonial; they are a way for the nation to honour those whose contributions have greatly influenced its creative and cultural landscape.
Yaw Sarpong, widely regarded as one of the pillars of Ghanaian gospel music, built a remarkable career spanning decades.
He developed talents, encouraged souls, and helped bring gospel music to the attention of the general public through his ministry and music.
