A 101-year-old great-grandmother has been arrested in Nigeria over an alleged involvement in the illegal sale of cannabis, according to media reports.
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reportedly arrested the centenarian, identified as Esther Ogunmabo, in Ogun State in southwestern Nigeria. Authorities allegedly found 90 grams of cannabis packaged in retail sachets in her possession.
The elderly woman reportedly told investigators that she became involved in the illegal drug trade after a fire destroyed her provisions shop. She allegedly claimed that her daughter arranged cannabis supplies for her every four days.
The arrest has drawn attention to Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, cannabis sales and illicit drug distribution across the country.
