Four individuals have been detained by the Ghana Police Service in the Western Region for allegedly assaulting police officers.
The police claim that on March 9, 2023, the Axim Divisional Police patrol squad was attacked by a gang, who stole some of the officers’ mobile phones and the magazine of a service rifle.
“An intelligence operation was promptly initiated after the report to get the suspects arrested,” read a statement on Sunday, April 2nd 2023.
The law enforcement agency stated that on March 28, 2023, four men—Kojo Siah alias Mozey, Emmanuel Mensah alias Kofi Asamoah, Maxwell Cudjoe, and Agyabu Haruna Dissawu—were detained for their alleged involvement in the attack. This was after around three weeks of the intelligence operation.
“Three (3) pump-action shotguns were found following a search at the home of Kwame Ato Asare Ani, the primary suspect, who is currently at large. In addition, the suspect’s unregistered Honda CRV vehicle yielded eight (8) BB-refilled cartridges, two (2) machetes, and one (1) pump-action shotgun.
Two (2) live, reloaded BB cartridges and one (1) unregistered motorcycle were among the additional goods taken from the accused, the statement continued.
The police were alerted to “video footage in which the said police personnel, members of the Axim patrol team, are shown pleading with members of the gang while the gang alleged extortion by the police officers” on April 1, 2023, as the investigations to apprehend the remaining suspects were ongoing.

The Ghana Police Service further stated that the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSP) had been tasked with investigating the allegations of extortion against the officers.
All of the suspects who had been detained in connection with the purported attack on the patrol team have since been brought before the court and remanded in custody.
The pursuit of the other suspects’ apprehension is ongoing.
