The NDC leadership has declared support for James Gyakye Quayson, who is up against obstacles in his bid to win re-election as the representative for Assin North.
The NDC’s general secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, announced that the group would support Mr. Quayson in an upcoming by-election. The NDC stated in a statement on May 18, 2023, that they thought the Supreme Court’s ruling was “unusual.” The statement was issued by Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC’s general secretary.
The party emphasized that it is understood, in light of prior cases involving Honorable J.H. Mensah, Honorable Baba Jamal, and Honorable Peter Amewu, that the Supreme Court lacks the authority to invalidate a Parliamentary election and that such issues should instead be brought before the High Court. The NDC is perplexed by the Supreme Court’s most recent decision.
The party reaffirmed that it was ready for the by-election that would be held as a result of this choice. In order to ensure an even more overwhelming victory for Honourable Quayson in the impending by-election, they vowed they would completely back him, including the Minority Caucus in Parliament.
The Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that James Gyakye Quayson’s name should no longer be listed in the Parliament. The Court ruled on May 17, 2023, that Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s election as MP for Assin North was invalid due to his dual citizenship at the time he petitioned to challenge the 2020 results.
After the Cape Coast High Court invalidated Mr. Quayson’s election as the MP for Assin North in July 2021, Michael Ankomah Nimfa, a resident of Assin Bereku in the Central area, filed a lawsuit against him to stop him from continuing to hold himself out as an MP.
James Gyakye Quayson’s continuing holding of the position notwithstanding the High Court’s ruling invalidating his election, according to the petitioner, violated the constitution and was unfair to the residents of Assin North.
