Before voting on President Akufo-Addo’s candidate for Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, the Minority in Parliament is requesting the verdict in the case of former Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson.

The Minority claims that because the Supreme Court’s reasoned decision in the case of Hon. James Gyakye Quayson was unavailable, they were unable to vote on the President’s nomination.

Governments Kwame Agbodza also asked that the court’s reasoned judgment on the matter be rendered by 7 June 2023 to make a decision, according to a news release issued by the Minority Chief Whip.

“Due to the absence of the Supreme Court’s reasoned decision in the case of Hon. James Gyakye Quayson, the Minority Members on the Appointments Committee of Parliament did not vote on the President’s candidate for the position of Chief Justice today.

It’s crucial to note that this nominee for the Supreme Court was examined and confirmed by the Appointments Committee not long ago, in 2019. But since the vetting in 2019, it was crucial for Members of The Minority on the Committee to assess the nominee’s decisions on all other instances, including the James Gyakye Quayson case, Mr. Agbodza said.

“We successfully assessed the nominee on all pertinent factors, with the exception of the pending case involving James Gyakye Quayson, which would have allowed us to make a decision,” he stated. By 7 June 2023, we anticipate the court’s well-reasoned judgment on this issue to be definitive.

“We duly informed our colleagues on the Majority side of our challenge and expect their cooperation.”
