On Sunday, May 28, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo neglected to provide an update on the whereabouts of his Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, despite having said that a decision would be made after the IMF agreement.
A portion of Ghanaians were hoping the president will make a statement regarding the fate of the troubled Finance Minister before to his speech. But in contrast to expectations, the president said nothing, leaving the future of the Finance Minister unclear.
But it’s unclear whether the President will make a choice regarding Ofori-Atta in the upcoming days. In 2022, more than 80 NPP MPs demanded the Finance Minister’s dismissal due to the nation’s financial difficulties.
Following their meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the MPs later changed their minds. They bowed down to the President’s pleadings for the Minister to continue in her position in order to finalize Ghana’s bailout agreement with the Bretton Woods organization.
Now that the IMF agreement has been successfully concluded, some MPs are once again calling for the resignation of the Finance Minister and pleading with the President to keep his commitment to release Ofori-Atta.
President Akufo-Addo, according to one of the MPs, Eugene Boakye Antwi (MP for Subin), must keep his word and fire Ken Ofori-Atta. “My responsibility is to bring to light any shortcomings I perceive in the Ministry of Finance… You should resign for reasons of principle and conviction alone, Eugene Antwi remarked.
