Professor Michael Kpessa-Whyte, a university law instructor, was found guilty of contempt of court by the Supreme Court.
This occurs after the ardent NDC fan, who was charged with scandalizing the court, first entered a not guilty plea, afterwards altered it to guilty with explanation, and eventually entered a guilty plea.
Last week, Professor Kpessa-Whyte raised controversy by calling the Supreme Court “Stupid Court.”
He also blasted Ghana’s judiciary in its current state, branding it politicized and lacking in common sense in a tweet.
He then explained that he didn’t mean to disparage the Supreme Court in that post and extended an unequivocal apology.
However, the Supreme Court called him to appear and defend himself against being found in contempt for portraying them in that way.
Prof. Kpessah-Whyte was found guilty in court today, Tuesday, May 30, 2023, by a five-member panel led by Justice Mariama Owusu.
He is accused of defaming the Supreme Court, embarrassing the Supreme Court, and harming the nation’s highest court.
Kpessa-Whyte’s attorney, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, earlier begged for mercy and mitigation on behalf of his client before the Lord Justices.
He stated that his client will commit himself to defending the integrity of the Supreme Court, its Justices, and the whole Judiciary. He also vowed that his client would never make such a mistake again throughout his lifetime.
Additionally, Dr. Srem-Sai called the court’s attention to his client’s earlier apology and retractions of the abovementioned derogatory remarks.
