The Assin North parliamentary seat has been declared empty by the Parliament.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision on the Assin North election petition, Attorney General Godred Yaw Dame called the Speaker of Parliament.
The Supreme Court mandated that Parliament remove James Gyakye Quayson’s name from its files.
A request to hold a by-election was sent to the Electoral Commission (EC) in a letter dated Monday, May 29, 2023, and signed by the Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah.
The letter reads:
James Gyakye Quayson failed to renounce his Canadian citizenship at the time he submitted his candidacy paperwork to run in the 2020 Assin North parliamentary elections, according to the Supreme Court, which unanimously ordered Parliament to remove his name from its records.
