The National Democratic Congress (NDC) claimed that the Electoral Commission (EC) was trying to insert one of the NPP’s candidates’ names into the Assin North voter list in advance of the by-election, but the Commission rejected this claim.
Charles Opoku, a candidate for the NPP, is not a registered voter in the Assin North Constituency, the NDC discovered on Sunday, adding that the “illegal” action will assist the aspirant win.
In a statement in response to the accusations, the EC reiterated that they were untrue and should be regarded with the contempt they merit.
A person does not have to be a registered voter in a certain constituency to be able to run for office there, the EC stated in a statement.
For the record, the EC has not received a request of this nature from the NPP to transfer any individual’s votes. This claim is untrue and the product of the author’s fantasy. As usual, it seeks to impugn the Electoral Commission’s credibility.
Parts of the text stated that as long as a person is a Ghanaian, twenty-one years of age or older, of sound mind, and a registered voter, they are entitled to run for office in the constituency where they were born.
