ECOWAS has formally nominated President John Dramani Mahama to lead the African Union in 2027.
This comes after the ECOWAS Council of Ministers unanimously decided to nominate President Mahama as the only candidate for the bloc when the rotating chairmanship returns to the West African region during its meeting in Abuja, Nigeria.
Every year, the AU Chairmanship is switched amongst the five regions of Africa. President François Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola, who took office in February 2025, is now acting as Chair on behalf of Southern Africa for a period of one year.
The Council emphasised Mr. Mahama’s personal prominence as well as Ghana’s position as a crucial ECOWAS member that has made major contributions to the bloc’s status both regionally and internationally.
The ministers added that putting forward a cohesive candidate will increase ECOWAS’s chances of gaining powerful positions in regional and international organisations.
The Authority of Heads of State and Government will now receive the Council’s advice and is anticipated to adopt the declaration during its Sunday meeting.
