Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, gave an update on continuing interventions in Ghana’s power sector at the Government Accountability Series, addressing both recovery and structural efforts.
He verified that two generation units at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Station had been restored, adding roughly 280MW to the national grid. A third unit is anticipated to soon contribute an additional 140MW.
By the end of the week, all six units should be fully functional, he continued.
“Through emergency technical interventions and sheer determination, the second unit has been brought on and is generating power,” he said, noting that these actions have contributed to the restoration of generation capacity.
“Many transformers across the country are becoming obsolete and overstretched due to increasing demand and years of underinvestment,” he said in reference to infrastructure issues.
The Minister has instructed GRIDCo’s CEO to resign while investigations are conducted in reaction to the fire incident at the Akosombo power control center.
Additionally, he verified a significant change in leadership at the Ashanti Region’s Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
“We remain fully committed to restoring normalcy within the shortest possible time and delivering reliable electricity supply to every Ghanaian,” he said, reiterating the government’s pledge.
