Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, the Deputy Minister for Health, has committed to reducing maternal mortality by 20% by the end of 2026.

During a working visit to the Awutu Senya East Municipal Health Directorate as part of Phase 3 of the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Program (MMARP), she made this announcement.

She disclosed that despite greater access to professional care, maternal mortality is still Ghana’s sole declining health indicator, with over 950 fatalities reported last year.

She stated that a national action plan will concentrate on better referrals, better-equipped institutions, and early detection at the primary healthcare level.

Following a recent visit by the Health Minister, the Deputy Minister oversaw the presentation of vital equipment at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, including a digital X-ray machine, an ultrasound scanner, delivery beds and other necessities.

In order to improve service delivery at the busy clinic, she also revealed intentions to hire more physicians, midwives, and support personnel.

She also made a working visit to the Kasoa Polyclinic, where she discussed frontline issues with medical staff and emphasised the pressing need to resolve maternal crises and referral delays.

She emphasised the significance of staff wellbeing and compassionate treatment while urging healthcare professionals to provide useful feedback to guide solutions.

According to her, the visit is a component of increased government initiatives to lower avoidable maternal mortality and enhance the health of mothers and newborns across the country.
