President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing cutting-edge road infrastructure today, through the flagship Big Push Program while inspecting ongoing construction on the Asikuma–Anyirawase Road Project.

The President stated that significant national resources have been allocated to enhancing the nation’s road network, acknowledging the vital role that high-quality infrastructure plays in promoting economic growth, facilitating trade, and raising citizens’ standard of living.

He revealed that the initiative received more than GH¢13 billion from the government in its first phase and an additional GH¢30.8 billion this year, for a total investment commitment of more than GH¢40 billion.

According to President Mahama, work is presently being done on almost 2,500 kilometres of roads throughout the nation, including important highways and vital transportation routes that link regional capitals and significant economic hubs.

He explained that the program focuses on improving roads to higher engineering standards to provide greater durability and long-term value, going beyond ordinary rehabilitation.

In order to improve road quality and prolong their lifespan, asphaltic concrete is being used in the construction of numerous important highways.

The President expressed pleasure with the rate of work and praised contractors for their current efforts, pointing out that a number of projects are ahead of schedule.

He expressed hope that some road projects could be completed sooner than expected, even if December 2027 is still the projected completion date.

President Mahama emphasised how the finished roads will revolutionise communication, especially in the Volta Region, where better transportation connections will promote the flow of people, products, and services while increasing business activity.

He also underlined the significance of the Eastern Corridor Road Project, which will improve relations between the Northern, Volta, and Oti regions and open up new avenues for investment, trade, and regional integration.

The President also highlighted the Big Push Program’s employment benefits, stating that current initiatives are thought to have created roughly 300,000 direct and indirect jobs.

He pointed out that these prospects go beyond construction workers and include suppliers, transportation companies, food vendors, quarry operators, and a number of other companies that assist in the completion of projects.

Communities whose roads are not yet part of the program were reassured by President Mahama that the project is a long-term national endeavour.

He clarified that important trunk routes are now receiving priority, and future phases are planned to extend road improvements to other villages nationwide.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining the five-year program, emphasising that industry, agricultural expansion, trade, and Ghana’s overall development plan all depend on a dependable road network.
