Ing. Kwabena Bempong, a road construction consultant, reports that the rehabilitation of the Accra-Tema Motorway is 48% complete, with significant work made on drainage infrastructure to decrease floods along the corridor.
On Monday, July 13, Ing. Bempong stated on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle that work is presently focused on the urban highway, which will function as a service road alongside the freeway.
“We’re currently working on the urban highway, which is more like a service road. We’re currently around 48%; we have not yet gone halfway through,” he continued.
He stated that building drainage systems and interchanges to alleviate flooding issues has taken up a large portion of the effort to date.
“The challenges we have had mainly were the various diversions around the interchanges and the drainage structures,” he said.
He states that the project entails building three interchanges and roughly twenty culverts, the majority of which are almost finished.
“We have about 20 culverts and three interchanges; we have constructed lots of them, and the majority are almost done, and that has reduced the flooding; we didn’t experience that,” he said.
According to Ing. Bempong, contractors have also made sure that drivers can continue to use the motorway during the building phase.
“We make sure the road is passable throughout the period of construction,” he reiterated.
His comments follow President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for a statewide cleanup effort in the wake of recent floods that killed people, uprooted locals, and flooded homes across the nation.
During the exercise, which took place on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, the President, public authorities, and members of the public cleared clogged gutters, cleaned roadways in impacted communities, and desilt drains.
