President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Belgrade, Serbia, to participate in a high-level meeting commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
President Mahama’s attendance underscores Ghana’s historic contribution to the Non-Aligned Movement, having been one of the founding members of the organisation when it was established in 1961.
The anniversary meeting is being held under the theme, “The Legacy of Non-Alignment: Lessons for Today’s World.” The summit is expected to focus on the continued relevance of NAM’s core principles, including sovereign equality, respect for territorial integrity, non-interference in domestic affairs, and stronger economic cooperation among developing countries.
Mahama joins world leaders in Belgrade
The summit is being hosted by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and has attracted high-level representatives from more than 30 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.
President Mahama’s participation provides Ghana with an opportunity to contribute to discussions on international relations, global peace, economic development and cooperation among developing nations.
With 120 member states, the Non-Aligned Movement remains the largest international grouping outside the United Nations. The organisation was created during the Cold War to provide developing countries with an independent diplomatic platform rather than requiring them to align with either the Western capitalist bloc or the Soviet socialist bloc.
Ghana’s role in the Non-Aligned Movement
Ghana has played a significant role in the history of the Non-Aligned Movement. The country’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was among the prominent leaders who helped advance the movement’s vision.
Nkrumah worked alongside other influential leaders of the era, including Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and Indonesian President Sukarno.
President Mahama’s presence at the NAM 65th anniversary meeting in Belgrade therefore highlights Ghana’s longstanding commitment to non-alignment, multilateral diplomacy, African development and international cooperation.
