President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Gondar, Ethiopia, for an official visit at the invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, ahead of the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa.

Upon arriving at Gondar Airport on Friday, President Mahama joined Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to officially switch on the Megech Irrigation Development Project, a major infrastructure initiative expected to improve agricultural production, food security and access to clean water in the region.

The project, which began 18 years ago, experienced significant delays before being revived by the Ethiopian government three years ago and subsequently completed.

Megech Dam to Boost Agriculture and Food Security

The Megech Dam covers approximately 870 hectares and has a water storage capacity of 185 million cubic metres. The facility is expected to provide irrigation for about 17,000 hectares of farmland, helping farmers increase agricultural productivity and strengthen food security.

The project will also provide a reliable supply of clean drinking water to Gondar and neighbouring satellite towns, improving access to essential water services and supporting local economic development.

President Mahama commended the Ethiopian government and its people for their determination in completing the project, describing it as an important investment that will benefit present and future generations.

The irrigation development is expected to support sustainable agriculture, improve livelihoods and contribute to Ethiopia’s long-term economic growth.

Mahama to Chair Tana High-Level Forum on African Security

President Mahama is scheduled to travel to Bahir Dar on Saturday to chair the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa.

The forum will bring together African leaders, policymakers and security experts to discuss major challenges affecting peace, governance and security across the continent.

The meeting provides an opportunity for African stakeholders to strengthen cooperation, explore solutions to emerging security threats and promote sustainable peace and stability.

Mahama’s participation highlights Ghana’s engagement in regional and continental discussions on African security, development and governance.
