The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has warned against hurrying attempts to restore energy following a severe power system disruption that affected portions of the country, emphasising the importance of safety concerns in preventing a larger collapse of the national grid.
The report comes after GRIDCo announced that on Wednesday, 29 July, at around 3:11 AM, Ghana’s National Interconnected Transmission System encountered a significant power system disturbance that caused many producing plants to trip and interruptions in the supply of electricity.
Engineers from Ghana Grid Company Limited are working nonstop to reconnect impacted customers, but the restoration procedure needs to be done cautiously and methodically, according to Richmond Rockson, a spokesperson for the Minister for Energy and Green Transition.
He stated that as engineers continue the staged restoration exercise, power has already been restored in a number of regions, while other villages are still waiting for reconnection.
“The power restoration is a process, a very technical process. We are very conscious when it comes to the attempt to restore power because we do not want to compromise the safety of the power infrastructure,” Mr Rockson explained.
He pointed out that proceeding too swiftly without doing adequate checks could pose a greater threat to the nation’s electrical infrastructure, including the possibility of a total system failure.
“Power restoration is being done in phases. If you are not careful and you compromise safety with speed, you can create a bigger problem than what the problem is now,” he added.
Before reaching homes and businesses, the supply of power passes through several stages, including production, transmission, bulk supply points, and substations. Mr. Rockson added that interruptions at any of these phases can have an impact on communities.
He declined to provide a precise date for the reconnection of all impacted locations, but he did reassure consumers who are still without energy that work are underway to restore supply.
Since then, GRIDCo has initiated its restoration processes and started looking into the disturbance’s precise cause.
