Authorities in Burkina Faso have announced a possible delay in the planned Bagre Dam spillage, easing immediate concerns over potential flooding in downstream communities in Ghana.
The Bagre Dam spillage, which was initially expected to begin on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, may not take place as scheduled, according to a communication from SONABEL Power of Burkina Faso to Ghana’s National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
Bagre Dam Water Level Remains Low
In its update to NADMO, SONABEL provided details on the hydrological conditions of the Bagre and Kompienga dams as of August 7, 2026.
According to the Burkinabe power authorities, the water level at the Bagre Dam has been rising slowly, recording an average increase of approximately 1.75 centimetres per day since August 4, 2026.
SONABEL explained that the slow rate of increase means the opening of the dam’s floodgates may not occur on Tuesday as previously anticipated.
However, the situation could change if significant inflows of water cause the reservoir level to rise rapidly.
Current Bagre Dam Water Level
The latest figures provided by SONABEL indicate that the upstream water level at the Bagre Dam stands at 232.99 metres, with the dam currently 74.31% full.
The reservoir level remains about 2.01 metres below the normal operating level of 235.00 metres.
The update suggests that the dam has not yet reached the level that would require immediate release of excess water.
Kompienga Dam Records 75.94% Capacity
SONABEL also provided an update on the Kompienga Dam, which is currently at a filling rate of 75.94%.
The water level at the dam was recorded at 177.51 metres, while its reservoir level remains 2.49 metres below the normal level of 180.00 metres.
The figures form part of ongoing monitoring of water levels in Burkina Faso, particularly because changes in dam operations can have implications for downstream communities in Ghana.

The Burkinabe authorities have assured their Ghanaian counterparts that they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on any significant changes.
The development comes as Ghanaian authorities and communities remain attentive to information concerning the Bagre Dam spillage, potential flooding, dam water levels and flood preparedness.
