Clarification, Retraction And Apology
Following further reflection and extensive consultations with my lawyers, friends and other persons whose counsel I value, I have decided that it is appropriate to clarify an earlier post concerning Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah and to withdraw the images associated with it.
The post arose in the context of similar images of me which had earlier been published by the Ghana Today Podcast, a platform I regard as sympathetic to the NPP. In responding to that publication, I subsequently posted images relating to Hon. Assafuah.
Following my post, Hon. Assafuah reached out to me personally and provided his account of the circumstances surrounding the particular Facebook page in question. He explained that, although I was aware that he had previously administered the page, he left it at the Ministry of Education under its original name, “Ministry of Education Ghana”, upon his departure from the Ministry.
Having considered his explanation, together with the advice I have received, I believe the fair and responsible course is to accept his clarification and bring the matter to a close.
Accordingly,
I have withdrawn the images of Hon. Assafuah from my Facebook page.
To the extent that my earlier publication created the impression that Hon. Assafuah remained responsible for, controlled, or was personally connected with the subsequent use of that page, I retract that impression and apologise unreservedly to him for any embarrassment or inconvenience the publication may have caused.
Public discourse can be robust, particularly where political issues are involved, but fairness also requires that where further information provides a proper basis for clarification, one should be prepared to acknowledge it.
I have therefore done so.
The images have been withdrawn, the necessary clarification has been made, and as far as I am concerned, the matter is now closed.
