The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Ghana, with support from the Ghana Police Service and National Security, has seized cigarette-shaped candy being sold at the Makola Market in Accra.
The enforcement operation followed complaints from members of the public and concerns raised on social media about the sale and distribution of the products on the Ghanaian market.
FDA Seizes Cigarette-Shaped Candy, Arrests Suspect
In a Facebook statement published on Saturday, August 29, 2026, the FDA confirmed that the cigarette-shaped confectionery products were seized during the enforcement exercise.
The Authority also disclosed that one suspect was arrested in connection with the sale of the products.
The FDA’s intervention forms part of its ongoing efforts to monitor regulated products and protect consumers from items that may violate Ghana’s food safety, public health and product regulation requirements.
Cigarette-Shaped Products Raise Public Health Concerns
According to the FDA, the depiction and advertising of tobacco and tobacco-related products are prohibited under Ghana’s Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) and the Tobacco Control Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2247).
The regulations prohibit the advertising and depiction of tobacco and related products in the media as well as at points of sale.
The FDA’s action therefore highlights the importance of complying with Ghana’s tobacco control laws and regulations governing the marketing and presentation of products to consumers.
FDA Warns Against Non-Compliant Products
The Food and Drugs Authority said the enforcement exercise is part of its broader mandate to ensure that regulated products sold on the Ghanaian market meet the required safety and regulatory standards.
The Authority further assured the public that it would continue monitoring the market and taking enforcement action against products, businesses and practices that contravene Ghana’s public health and regulatory laws.
Consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report products they suspect may violate Ghana’s food safety regulations, consumer protection requirements or public health laws to the appropriate authorities.
