About 15,000 residents of Kunfusi and neighbouring communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of Ghana’s Savannah Region have reportedly been cut off from other parts of the region following severe flooding and the collapse of the Kunfusi Dam.
The incident occurred after approximately 15 hours of continuous rainfall between September 23 and 24, 2026, causing significant flooding and damaging key roads linking the affected communities.
The situation has left several routes impassable, disrupting the movement of residents, farm produce, food and other essential supplies.
Kunfusi Roads Become Impassable After Flooding
The Chief of Kunfusi, Kunfusiwura Saaka Awusi, confirmed the situation in an interview with Bole-based Nkilgi FM.
According to the traditional leader, the condition of the main road has deteriorated significantly, making it impossible for vehicles to reach the community.
He said the road had effectively ceased to be motorable, leaving an estimated 15,000 people isolated from the wider Savannah Region.
The severe flooding has also affected sections of the Tuna-Kalba road, further complicating transportation and increasing the isolation of communities in the area.
Flooding Threatens Food Supply in Sawla-Tuna-Kalba
The flooding has raised concerns about the potential impact on food production and agricultural supply chains in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.
Kunfusi and surrounding communities are recognised as important food-producing areas, meaning prolonged road closures could affect the transportation of farm produce to markets and other parts of the Savannah Region.
Residents are also concerned that the damaged roads could make it more difficult to transport essential commodities into the affected communities.
Access to important services outside Kunfusi could also become increasingly difficult if the road network remains disrupted.
Chief Appeals for Urgent Government Intervention
Kunfusiwura Saaka Awusi has appealed to the government and relevant authorities to take immediate steps to restore road access to Kunfusi and neighbouring communities.
He called for urgent intervention to reopen the affected routes and restore safe transportation for residents.
The Chief also urged authorities to pursue a long-term solution to recurring flooding and road damage in the area.
He said the repeated disruption is particularly concerning because of the district’s contribution to agricultural production and food supply.
Residents Seek Lasting Solution to Recurring Flooding
Residents of Kunfusi and nearby communities are calling for emergency assistance to repair the damaged roads and reconnect the affected areas with neighbouring communities.
Beyond the immediate response, residents are seeking measures to address the underlying causes of perennial flooding in the Savannah Region and reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
The collapse of the Kunfusi Dam and the resulting road damage have highlighted the vulnerability of communities in the area during periods of heavy rainfall.
