The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has donated $250,000 in emergency relief assistance to support victims of Ghana’s devastating June floods, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced.
The financial assistance, estimated at approximately GH¢3 million, is expected to provide relief to individuals and households affected by the flooding, which caused significant damage across parts of the Greater Accra Region.
In a Facebook post on Friday, October 16, 2026, Ablakwa disclosed that the funds had been transferred directly to the accounts of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), the organisation selected to manage the distribution of the relief package.
The donation forms part of ongoing efforts to support flood victims, provide humanitarian assistance, and help affected communities recover from the impact of the disaster.
ADRA Selected to Distribute ECOWAS Flood Relief Funds
According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) agreed to appoint ADRA as an independent implementing partner responsible for overseeing the distribution of the ECOWAS relief funds.
The arrangement is intended to promote transparency, accountability, and fairness in the allocation of assistance to eligible flood victims.
Under the proposed process, ADRA will independently manage the support programme, while the government will not be directly involved in selecting individual beneficiaries.
The decision is aimed at ensuring that the $250,000 flood relief donation reaches the intended recipients through a transparent process that prioritises the needs of people affected by the disaster.
Ablakwa Pledges Transparency in ECOWAS Relief Programme
The Foreign Affairs Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the relief funds are managed responsibly and distributed in accordance with the principles of transparency and accountability.
He made the announcement during the inauguration of Ghana’s National Consultative Committee on Regional Integration (NCCRI).
The committee has been established to oversee ECOWAS regional integration programmes and social interventions in Ghana, strengthening the country’s participation in regional cooperation initiatives.
The relief donation also highlights the role of ECOWAS in supporting member states during humanitarian emergencies and promoting regional solidarity when communities face natural disasters.
Ghana’s June Floods Affected Thousands of Residents
The ECOWAS donation comes after severe flooding on June 29, 2026, affected more than 38,000 people across the Greater Accra Region.
The disaster displaced more than 7,700 households and claimed at least 15 lives, highlighting the devastating consequences of recurring floods in the capital.
The incident renewed concerns about Accra’s persistent flooding challenges, inadequate drainage systems, poor waste disposal practices, and the need for improved urban planning.
The disaster also intensified calls for stronger flood prevention measures, improved drainage infrastructure, effective waste management, and better emergency preparedness to protect vulnerable communities.
ECOWAS Support Expected to Help Flood-Affected Communities
The $250,000 donation is expected to contribute to humanitarian relief efforts for people whose homes and livelihoods were affected by the June floods.
With ADRA overseeing the distribution process, authorities hope the assistance will reach eligible beneficiaries through an independent and accountable system.
The development underscores the importance of cooperation between the Ghanaian government, regional institutions, and humanitarian organisations in responding to natural disasters and supporting affected populations.
As Ghana continues to address the consequences of recurring floods, the ECOWAS intervention adds to efforts to provide immediate assistance while highlighting the need for long-term solutions to the country’s urban flooding problem.
