Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, an aide to former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has alleged that some inmates attempted to poison the politician while he was in prison.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as Wontumi marked 100 days in prison, Boakye-Danquah said investigations had reportedly been initiated to establish the facts surrounding the alleged incident.

According to the aide, Wontumi informed him about the suspected poisoning attempt when he appeared in court. He added that the prison commander had assured him that the matter was being investigated.

However, Boakye-Danquah provided no further details about the alleged incident or the possible motive behind it. The poisoning allegation has not been independently verified.

The aide also reiterated Wontumi’s call for reforms to Ghana’s prison system, advocating improved inmate welfare, rehabilitation and support for prisoners returning to society.

Wontumi is serving a 20-year prison sentence following his conviction over mining activities allegedly conducted on his Samreboi concession without approval from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

The former NPP regional chairman is seeking temporary release while challenging his conviction and sentence at the Court of Appeal.

The alleged poisoning incident has raised concerns about inmate safety and prison security in Ghana, although the circumstances surrounding the claim remain subject to investigation.
