Ghana’s aviation sector has received a major boost following the launch of Uganda Airlines’ inaugural flight to Accra, with Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe welcoming the development as an important step towards improving air connectivity and strengthening economic relations between Ghana and Uganda.

The Ugandan national carrier commenced operations at Accra International Airport on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, introducing a four-times-weekly flight service connecting Entebbe in Uganda, Lagos in Nigeria, and Accra in Ghana.

The new route expands Uganda Airlines’ African flight network and provides passengers with an additional travel option between East and West Africa. It is also expected to support tourism, international trade, business travel and investment opportunities across the region.

Ghana Government Welcomes Uganda Airlines Flights

Speaking at the inaugural flight ceremony, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in aviation infrastructure to improve Ghana’s position as a leading destination for international air travel.

He welcomed the airline’s entry into Ghana’s aviation market, highlighting the importance of improved air transport services in promoting economic development and regional integration.

The government’s continued investment in airport infrastructure is expected to attract more international airlines, increase passenger traffic and strengthen Ghana’s aviation industry.

Ghana Airports Company Highlights Investment Opportunities

The Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, described Uganda Airlines’ arrival as a significant milestone in the growing relationship between Ghana and Uganda.

She explained that the new flight service would provide more travel options while improving connectivity between the two countries.

According to her, the route is expected to stimulate tourism, promote cultural exchange, facilitate international trade and strengthen economic cooperation.

The development also reflects Ghana’s growing attractiveness as a destination for aviation investment and international airline operations.

Uganda Airlines Expands Its African Flight Network

Uganda Airlines Chief Executive, Mr Girma Wake, said the new Accra service would improve air connectivity between West and East Africa, making travel between the two regions more convenient.

The flights will operate through Lagos, Nigeria, before continuing to Accra, rather than offering a direct, non-stop service between Entebbe and Accra.

The airline will use a Boeing 737-800 aircraft wet-leased from Ethiopian Airlines. A wet lease allows an airline to operate an aircraft supplied with its crew, maintenance and insurance, enabling it to expand its routes without immediately acquiring additional aircraft.

The arrangement provides Uganda Airlines with an opportunity to extend its regional network while managing the operational requirements of the new service.

New Flight Route Could Increase Competition and Lower Airfares

The introduction of Uganda Airlines flights to Ghana offers passengers another option alongside existing connections through major African aviation hubs, including Nairobi and Addis Ababa.

The additional service could increase competition among airlines operating between East and West Africa, potentially creating more choices for travellers and putting pressure on airfares.

However, actual ticket prices will depend on passenger demand, operating costs, airline capacity and competition on the route.

Improved flight connections are particularly important for African businesses, tourists and investors who often depend on indirect routes and lengthy transit stops to travel between countries on the continent.

Uganda Airlines Targets Trade and Tourism Growth

The Accra route forms part of Uganda Airlines’ broader strategy to develop a commercially sustainable network and strengthen Entebbe International Airport’s role as a regional aviation hub.

By connecting more African markets, the airline aims to improve access to business destinations and facilitate connections with international travel networks.

For Ghana and Uganda, the new service could create opportunities for increased business travel, tourism development, commercial partnerships and cross-border investment.

The improved air link is also expected to support closer economic relations between the two countries and other markets served along the route.

Improved Air Connectivity Supports African Economic Integration

Limited air connectivity remains a significant challenge to trade and economic integration across Africa. In many cases, passengers travelling between African countries must transit through distant international hubs, increasing travel time and costs.

The launch of Uganda Airlines in Ghana represents another effort to address this challenge by expanding regional flight options.

As Ghana continues to attract international airlines and invest in aviation infrastructure, improved air transport services could contribute to tourism growth, business expansion and the country’s ambition to become a major aviation hub in West Africa.
