An explosion at Anto-Aboso in the Shama District of the Western Region has been verified to have killed four people.
Three citizens of Ghana and one foreigner make up the victims. Ten people managed to leave without being hurt, while five others are currently receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, there are still a number of people missing.
On Saturday, September 9, 2023, at around 10 p.m., an explosion involving ammonia nitrate occurred at a quarry site run by a group of Chinese nationals in Anto-Aboso, Shama District, Western Region.
This occurrence reminds me of an earlier explosion in the same area in Appiatse. A vehicle carrying explosives owned by Maxam Limited was involved in an accident that led to the Appiatse explosion on January 20, 2022. The Appiatse disaster’s aftermath resulted in the deaths of 14 people and the injuries of hundreds of locals.
In reaction to the Appiatse catastrophe, a special committee was formed to look into the disaster’s circumstances. The committee then presented the government with its conclusions.
The authorities punished Maxam Company, the organization in charge of delivering the explosives through its subcontractors, by levying a $6 million punishment on it.
