Yesterday, October 13, 2023, at the regional party office in South La, fighting broke out during the screening of candidates for the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Odododiodioo constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
After disagreement over who the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 general elections should be, the miscommunication turned violent.
This comes after some of one of the candidates’ supporters decided to damage party property, including chairs and an air conditioner, and threw rocks at the members of the vetting committee, injuring some people in the process and accusing them of being unjust.
Three people were vying to succeed the current MP, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, who decided not to run for reelection at the last minute: Nii Okai Laryea, Kotey Ashie, and Michael Nii Yarboi Annang.
This is because a similar misunderstanding that the party had to clear up prevented the Odododiodio Constituency from taking part in the vetting process that took place in February 2023.
The party had hoped that today’s screening would decide which of the three candidates would advance to the party’s parliamentary primary, which is scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, 2023. However, mayhem broke out, forcing everyone to leave the procedure.
However, Michael Nii Yarboi Anang, one of the candidates for elected office, had already undergone screening before the mess started.
Mr. Anang, a former New Patriotic Party member, hopes to be selected by the NDC to represent the Odododiodioo Constituency in parliament.
