Proceedings in the case involving nine people connected to the gun incident that injured former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo have been postponed until September 23.
The defendants were granted GH¢500,000 bail with two sureties by the Adentan Circuit Court, which prompted the adjournment. As part of the court’s requirements, the sureties must complete bail justification paperwork even though they are not needed to be justified.
Nana Kofi Safo Kantanka, the Kristo Asafo Mission’s attorney, confirmed the charges in an interview with Eyewitness News on Tuesday, June 23. She stated that the prosecution’s case focused on two main allegations: involvement in prohibited vigilante activity and unlawful possession of weapons. All nine of the accused have entered not guilty pleas to various charges.
The incident is the result of a violent outburst that happened at a meeting associated with the Kristo Asafo Mission after a disagreement over leadership was sparked by the founder’s passing, Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
“The charges was the prohibition of vigilante groups and then possession of weapons unlawfully. Basically those were the two charges that I went through,” he said.
Benjamin Amoakwa Sam, Jehosaphat Tamaklo Safo, Kwabena Safo, and Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, a relative of the injured former MP, are among those on trial. Enock Badu, Richard Ayitey, Gideon Safo, Nana Kwaku Afriyie, and Kwadwo Safo Koomsom are among the others; others are rumoured to have acted as personal bodyguards for members of the opposing faction.
According to the prosecution, Adwoa Safo was injured in a shooting that happened during activities related to a contentious installation procedure within the religious organization.
As investigations and legal proceedings continue, the court is anticipated to hear the case again on September 23.
