The United States defeated Iran 1-0 to advance to the World Cup’s round of 16 while Christian Pulisic scored the game-winning goal in the first half and hurt himself in the process.
The Chelsea forward scored from close range in the 38th minute, but he was left hobbling after a rough contact with the goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand. Although he was able to finish the half, Pulisic was substituted at halftime.
On the verge of halftime, Timothy Weah had a goal disallowed for offside. Iran improved after the interval, but they provided little offensively and failed to rally when a draw would have been enough to advance them to the knockout rounds for the first time.
With five points, the USA placed second in Group B and will next play the Netherlands.
