Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Energy, has reaffirmed Ghana’s desire for more gas supply to bolster electricity production.

He claims that as part of his attempts to guarantee power stability for Ghanaians’ use in their homes and businesses, this continues to be his top concern.

Dr. Prempeh stressed the necessity of increasing gas supplies and, consequently, the West Africa Gas Pipeline’s (WAGP) operational efficacy.

On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, in Lome, Togo, he presented these claims at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers (CoM) of the West Africa Gas Pipeline.

The West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) technical, commercial, and regulatory issues are discussed in the CoM meeting, which brings together the energy ministers of Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo.

The Minister took advantage of the occasion to meet with important parties regarding Ghana’s need for additional gas to generate electricity. Gas suppliers were pushed by Dr. Prempeh to enhance the services they provide to recipient nations.

The minister’s request was supported by the ministers of Togo and Benin, whose nations also rely on Nigeria for its gas supplies in order to generate energy.

According to him, the present cost of liquid fuel substitutes is prohibitive and puts the WAGP countries in debt each time the gas supply is reduced.
