The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, and the Ga Traditional Council have advocated for a coordinated national strategy to address Accra’s recurrent flooding, stating that engineering measures alone are insufficient to address the problem.

The Council sent its condolences to the families, business owners, drivers, and communities impacted by the recent floods in a statement released on July 1.

Additionally, it praised the government’s response, recognising the efforts of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Metropolitan Assemblies, security services, emergency responders, and Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo for their efforts to save lives and restore order.

As the land’s guardians, the Council stated that flooding in Accra is not only an engineering problem but also one that calls for stringent adherence to land-use restrictions, better sanitation, environmental stewardship, and respect for natural rivers.

It reiterated its support for sustainable policies that safeguard drainage systems, stop illegal construction on waterways, encourage community-led sanitation projects, bolster public education, and improve cooperation between government agencies, district assemblies, traditional authorities, faith-based organisations, companies, youth organisations, and locals.

The Ga Traditional Council also promised to use its traditional authority and structures to encourage behavioural change, civic accountability, and a shared feeling of responsibility among inhabitants in order to defend the capital.

It expressed confidence that, despite the fact that heavy rains will persist, their effects could be mitigated by cooperation, efficient enforcement, strategic planning, and disciplined action, so averting the recurrent devastation brought on by flooding.
