President John Dramani Mahama has inspected ongoing rehabilitation works at the Saglemi Housing Project, with 700 housing units expected to be completed and commissioned by March 2027.
The President has urged Ghanaians interested in purchasing homes at the revitalised estate to apply quickly once the official sales portal becomes available, warning that demand for the affordable housing units is likely to be very high.
“I want to encourage Ghanaians to register as soon as the sales portal opens because these houses will be in high demand,” President Mahama said during his inspection of the project.
Saglemi Housing Project Completion Timeline
The Saglemi housing development, which faced years of delays due to legal and administrative challenges, is now being revived under a public-private partnership with LMI.
According to the developers, the first 700 housing units are expected to be ready for commissioning by March 2027. The remaining units will bring the total number of completed homes to 1,500 by December 2027.
The project is expected to provide additional housing opportunities for Ghanaian families and workers while supporting the government’s broader affordable housing agenda.
Mahama Recalls Saglemi Project Abandonment
President Mahama recalled that the Saglemi Housing Project was initially started under the late President John Evans Atta Mills and continued during his administration before being abandoned following a change in government.
He said extensive vandalism occurred during the period the estate remained unoccupied, resulting in the removal of electrical fittings, cables, bathroom fixtures, bulbs and other infrastructure.
According to the President, the vandalism left much of the development as an “empty shell,” creating additional challenges for efforts to restore the housing project.
New Infrastructure to Support Saglemi Estate
President Mahama said the redevelopment of Saglemi forms part of the government’s broader “new city” development vision, covering the corridor from Bortianor towards the Volta Lake.
Residents are expected to benefit from several major infrastructure projects surrounding the estate. A dedicated water treatment facility at a nearby industrial site is expected to provide water to the housing community.
Meanwhile, work has started on the dualisation of the Saglemi-Afienya road, with the first phase currently underway.
Plans are also being considered for a railway connection that could serve residents and businesses operating within the Dawa Industrial Park.
“This is going to be a very major industrial and residential corridor,” President Mahama said.
High Demand Expected for Saglemi Homes
The President stressed that the housing units are intended primarily for Ghanaian workers and families. He cautioned prospective homeowners not to delay their applications once registration begins.
Mahama noted that businesses operating in the Tema and Dawa industrial areas could potentially acquire a significant number of the homes for their employees if individual applicants do not act quickly.
He praised the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources and the private developers for their efforts to revive the long-delayed housing project.
President Mahama also indicated that he expects to return around Easter to officially commission the first batch of completed Saglemi housing units.
