The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line, which disrupted electricity supply to parts of Ghana in the early hours of Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to GRIDCo, the fault occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. and triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units as well as some thermal power plants.
The automatic tripping was activated by the power system’s protection mechanisms to safeguard the stability and integrity of Ghana’s National Interconnected Transmission System.
GRIDCo Begins Emergency Power Restoration
Following the incident, GRIDCo engineers immediately worked with other key agencies in Ghana’s power sector to isolate the affected transmission line and begin the restoration of electricity supply.
The company said power has already been restored to some of the affected areas, while technical teams continue working to reconnect customers who remain without electricity.
GRIDCo explained that restoration is being carried out in a safe and systematic manner to prevent further disruptions and protect the national power transmission network.

The power transmission company said its technical teams have been fully mobilised and are working around the clock to achieve a complete restoration of electricity supply.
The disruption comes as Ghana continues to strengthen the reliability and resilience of its national power system, with the stability of the electricity transmission network remaining critical to households, businesses and industries.
GRIDCo has apologised to customers affected by the temporary power outage and appealed for patience and understanding while restoration operations continue.
The company also assured the public that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line fault and the ongoing power restoration exercise.
