The Accra-Tema Motorway project has reached 53 per cent completion, with project company A.T Expressway Limited reaffirming its commitment to completing the major road infrastructure project by August 2027 despite delays caused by utility relocation challenges.
The 19.5-kilometre motorway project, which began in August 2024, is designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety and enhance transportation and trade connectivity between Accra, Tema and surrounding communities.
Speaking at the launch of the company’s website on Wednesday, October 28, Chief Resident Engineer Ing. Kwabena Bempong explained that the project had experienced some delays due to difficulties relocating essential utility infrastructure, including pipelines and fibre-optic cables.
He, however, assured the public that measures were being taken to address the challenges and keep construction on track to meet the August 2027 completion deadline.
Accra-Tema Motorway Construction Progress
According to Ing. Bempong, construction equipment and other resources are available to support the continuous production and supply of asphalt concrete ahead of the road surfacing stage.
The first section of the project will feature a two-lane, access-controlled expressway alongside an urban highway with three lanes in each direction. Some sections will expand to five lanes in each direction to improve traffic merging and movement between the two roads.
The project also includes improvements to major interchanges at Tetteh Quarshie, Community 18 and Lashibi, as well as the construction of pedestrian crossing facilities.
These improvements are expected to enhance accessibility between communities on both sides of the motorway, reduce dangerous pedestrian crossings and improve traffic movements at major junctions.
Bridges, Drainage and Road Safety Improvements
The Accra-Tema Motorway redevelopment includes the construction of 20 box culverts and three bridges, with the various structures at different stages of completion.
The drainage facilities and bridges form part of the wider infrastructure improvements intended to support smoother traffic flow, improve road safety and strengthen the durability of the transport corridor.
Once completed, the project is expected to provide commuters and commercial transport operators with improved road infrastructure along one of Ghana’s busiest transport routes.
US$339 Million Accra-Tema Motorway Project
The US$339 million Accra-Tema Motorway project is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highway Authority.
A.T Expressway Limited is the project concessionaire, while Maripoma Enterprise Limited serves as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
The redevelopment is considered an important investment in Ghana’s road infrastructure, with anticipated benefits for commuters, businesses, freight operators and communities along the Accra-Tema corridor.
If completed as scheduled in August 2027, the project could help ease traffic congestion, improve urban mobility and support trade and economic activities between Accra, Tema and neighbouring areas.
