The Dome-Kitase Road Project is set to resume construction under Ghana’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme, following a government decision to revive the stalled road project.
The project was suspended after reaching approximately 27 percent completion, following the implementation of Ghana’s debt restructuring programme in 2022.
First Sky Limited Directed to Return to Site
Works on the Dome-Kitase Road are expected to restart this week after Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Agbodza directed the contractor, First Sky Limited, to fully mobilise to the project site.
The contractor has been instructed to return to site by the end of the week as government moves to accelerate construction and ensure the project progresses without further interruptions.
Under the revised implementation plan, the Dome-Kitase Road Project is expected to be completed by 2028.
Dome-Kitase Road Project Scope Expanded
The scope of the road project has also been expanded to include approximately 10 kilometres of connecting roads serving communities located along the project corridor.
The additional roads are expected to improve accessibility, transportation and connectivity for residents and communities in the area.
The expansion is also expected to support local economic activity by improving access to major roads, communities and commercial areas.
Government Prioritises Road Infrastructure Development
According to Kwame Agbodza, the decision to prioritise the Dome-Kitase Road under the Big Push Infrastructure Programme forms part of government’s broader strategy to address critical infrastructure needs across Ghana.
The government says the programme is aimed at supporting major infrastructure projects and improving the country’s road network.
Agbodza stressed that steps were being taken to ensure the Dome-Kitase project resumes fully and maintains steady progress until completion.
“We are taking the necessary steps to ensure that this project resumes fully and progresses without interruption. The contractor is expected to mobilise back to site by the end of this week, and we want to see sustained work until the project is completed,” he said.
Dome-Kitase Road Expected to Improve Connectivity
The resumption of construction is expected to bring renewed attention to one of the key road infrastructure projects in the Greater Accra Region.
Once completed, the Dome-Kitase Road, together with the additional connecting roads, is expected to improve traffic flow, road accessibility and connectivity for communities along the route.
The government’s decision to restart the project also forms part of ongoing efforts to accelerate Ghana road construction projects and improve transportation infrastructure across the country.
