The Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has cautioned contractors working on Ghana’s Big Push road infrastructure programme against compromising construction quality in their efforts to accelerate project delivery.

Mr Agbodza stressed that funding was not a major challenge for the programme, urging contractors to speed up construction while ensuring that all road projects meet the required engineering specifications and quality standards.

He gave the warning during an inspection of the ongoing 34-kilometre Sunyani Outer Ring Road project at Fiapre in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region. Contractors have begun major asphalt works on the road.

Sunyani Outer Ring Road Project Progresses

President John Dramani Mahama cut the sod for the Sunyani Outer Ring Road project on December 21, 2025, as part of the government’s Big Push initiative aimed at improving Ghana’s road network, reducing traffic congestion and strengthening connectivity to support economic growth.

During the inspection, Mr Agbodza commended Kofi Job Company Limited for the progress made so far and encouraged contractors handling other Big Push road projects to maintain the momentum.

He reminded contractors that the projects were intended to benefit the country and its citizens, stressing that quality road infrastructure would support communities, businesses and economic activities.

According to the minister, contractors should recognise that they are also beneficiaries of the development projects rather than treating them as work undertaken solely for the government or individual companies.

Roads Minister Warns Against Shoddy Construction

Mr Agbodza further cautioned contractors against poor workmanship that could lead to road deterioration shortly after completion.

He explained that road projects should be constructed to last, rather than requiring repeated repairs within a short period. Such failures, he indicated, could divert resources that could otherwise be used to improve roads in other communities.

The minister noted that several regions and communities across Ghana were waiting for their share of the Big Push road infrastructure projects. He therefore urged contractors to deliver durable roads that would allow the government to extend development to more areas.

He emphasised that meeting construction standards was essential to ensuring value for money and the long-term sustainability of public infrastructure investments.

Kofi Job Company Promises Early Completion

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Kofi Kamkam, an engineer with Kofi Job Company Limited, said the company remained committed to completing the Sunyani Outer Ring Road project ahead of schedule.

He explained that the dual-carriageway asphalt road was originally expected to be completed within two years. However, based on the current pace of construction, the company believes it could finish the project before the contractual deadline.

The commitment comes as the Roads and Highways Ministry pushes contractors to accelerate work on major road projects while maintaining the required construction quality.

Communities to Benefit From Sunyani Outer Ring Road

The 34-kilometre Sunyani Outer Ring Road is expected to improve transportation and road connectivity for several communities in the Sunyani area.

The project links Fiapre, Nanketewa, Old Abesim, Old Odomase and New Odomase, while connecting to the main Sunyani-Berekum and Sunyani-Abesim highways.

Once completed, the road is expected to improve access between communities, support commercial activities and make travel more convenient for residents and road users.

The project forms part of the government’s broader Big Push road development agenda, which seeks to expand Ghana’s road infrastructure, improve regional connectivity and support economic development.
