The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has reaffirmed its commitment to increasing the participation of young Ghanaians in national policymaking and development planning.
The Ministry said it wants the voices, aspirations, experiences and concerns of young people to play a greater role in shaping government policies and programmes.
The commitment was announced at the maiden National Youth Forum, which was established to create a platform for continuous dialogue between young people and policymakers on issues affecting the youth.
National Youth Forum to Give Young People a Voice
Speaking at the forum, officials from the Ministry said the initiative fulfils a commitment by the sector Minister to establish a national platform where young Ghanaians can directly engage policymakers.
The forum is expected to provide an opportunity for young people to discuss challenges affecting their education, employment, skills development, entrepreneurship and participation in national development.
The Ministry also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for prioritising youth development through the establishment of a dedicated ministry focused on the needs and empowerment of young people.
Young People Make Up 38.5% of Ghana’s Population
According to the Ministry, young people account for approximately 38.5 percent of Ghana’s population, making their involvement in national development and decision-making increasingly important.
Officials said the National Youth Forum would help government gain a better understanding of the challenges, aspirations and lived experiences of young Ghanaians.
The views and recommendations gathered through the forum are expected to contribute to the development of policies and programmes that directly respond to the needs of the country’s youth.
Government Targets Youth Empowerment and Skills Development
The Ministry stressed that its mandate extends beyond creating opportunities for young people. It also includes developing a responsive, skilled and competitive youth population capable of contributing meaningfully to Ghana’s economic and social development.
The Ministry said recommendations from the National Youth Forum would serve as an important source of information for shaping future youth development policies and government programmes.
National Youth Forum Strengthens Government-Youth Engagement
The maiden National Youth Forum is expected to strengthen communication between the Ghana government and young people, while giving the youth a direct platform to participate in discussions about their future.
The initiative is also expected to support broader efforts to promote youth employment, entrepreneurship, skills development, education, leadership and active participation in Ghana’s national development.
