A 20-year-old man identified as Kombat Yaw Yiremiah has reportedly drowned while assisting travellers to cross a river separating Ghana and Togo at Tambalug in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.

The tragic incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026, when Yiremiah was helping travellers navigate the river.

As of Monday, August 17, his body had not been recovered, with community members, relatives and personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) continuing the search operation.

Young Man Missing After River Drowning

According to Yiremiah’s family, the deceased regularly assisted travellers crossing the border river between Ghana and Togo.

His services reportedly included helping Togolese nationals and travellers from Kumasi, Accra, Bolgatanga and Tamale cross into Togo or return to Ghana.

The family said Yiremiah had gone about his usual activity on Sunday when he drowned, turning what began as an ordinary day of helping travellers into a tragic incident.

NADMO Leads Search for Missing Body

The Tempane District NADMO Director, George Alale Akuka, confirmed that his team was actively involved in efforts to locate and recover the young man’s body.

According to him, search teams had covered a significant distance along the river but had not found Yiremiah as of Monday afternoon.

He described the situation as serious and assured the family and residents that NADMO personnel would continue the search.

The NADMO team has also been working with members of the community as efforts intensify to recover the missing body.

Community Seeks Professional Rescue Support

Following the drowning incident, the bereaved family and residents of Tambalug have appealed to the Ghana Police Service and NADMO for additional assistance.

They are calling for professional rescue personnel and appropriate equipment to support the recovery operation, particularly because of the challenging conditions in the river.

The incident has caused grief within the Tambalug community, with residents expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding the death of the young man who was reportedly helping travellers cross the Ghana-Togo border river.

The family is urging authorities to respond swiftly and provide the necessary resources to locate and recover Yiremiah’s body.

As the search continues, relatives and community members remain hopeful that the young man will be found and that his family can receive closure following the tragic Ghana-Togo border river drowning incident.
