A police officer has made serious allegations of misconduct and security breaches within the Ghana Police Service, claiming that ammunition is allegedly being sold to armed robbers who use the weapons to attack civilians and police officers in parts of Accra.
General Lance Corporal Nicholas Ohene Ampong Kissi made the allegations in videos shared on social media by Crime Check TV, calling on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno to investigate the matter.
Officer Alleges Ammunition Trafficking at Police Barracks
According to the officer, ammunition is allegedly being sold to criminals operating in areas within the Ablekuma Central and Ablekuma North constituencies.
He specifically mentioned the Mataheko and Odorkor Police Barracks, alleging that hardened criminals had gained control of parts of the facilities.
The officer claimed that the alleged activities posed a serious threat to both police officers and civilians, particularly if ammunition intended for law enforcement is diverted into the hands of criminals.
These claims have not been independently verified, and the allegations should be treated as claims pending an official investigation by the relevant authorities.
Police Officer Claims He Was Assaulted
The officer further alleged that he was attacked after attempting to raise concerns about the activities with senior police authorities.
He claimed that two individuals allegedly involved in the situation confronted him at the Odorkor Police Barracks, with one of them allegedly slapping him twice.
According to him, he had received intelligence about criminal activities in the area and was targeted after attempting to raise the alarm.
He therefore appealed directly to IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno to investigate the allegations and establish the facts surrounding the reported incidents.
Medical Report Presented After Alleged Assault
Following the alleged attack, General Lance Corporal Nicholas Ohene Ampong Kissi was seen at a police hospital displaying a medical report bearing the Ghana Police Service logo.
The document was reportedly presented as evidence to support his claim that he had been assaulted.
However, the full circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, the identity of the persons involved and the claims regarding ammunition sales remain subject to verification and possible police investigation.
Call for Investigation Into Ghana Police Service Allegations
The allegations have raised questions about police accountability, ammunition security, criminal activity and professional conduct within the Ghana Police Service.
If substantiated, the claims could have serious implications for public safety and police operations because ammunition intended for law enforcement could potentially be diverted to criminals.
An official investigation would be necessary to determine whether the allegations are accurate and, if so, identify those responsible and establish the appropriate legal and disciplinary action.
The development also highlights the importance of strong internal controls over police weapons and ammunition, as well as effective mechanisms for officers to report suspected misconduct without fear of retaliation.
