The Ghana Police Service has foiled a planned robbery attack targeting three banks in Labone, Accra, arresting one suspect and killing two others during a shootout.
According to the Police, the incident occurred at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after they received intelligence that a suspected robbery gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located in Labone.
A police response team was quickly deployed to the area, where the suspected robbers were reportedly seen in two vehicles parked near the banks.
When the suspects noticed the presence of the Police, one of the vehicles sped away in an attempt to escape. Officers pursued the vehicle and arrested a suspect identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while another occupant managed to flee.
The occupants of the second vehicle also attempted to escape while firing at the Police. Officers returned fire, resulting in a shootout that led to the deaths of two suspected robbers.
The Police subsequently recovered two vehicles believed to have been used by the suspects—a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17. A pistol was also recovered at the scene.
Suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with ongoing investigations into the alleged robbery syndicate.
The bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service has commended the response team for its swift action, which successfully prevented the planned bank robbery in Labone.
The Police have also expressed appreciation to members of the public for providing credible information that helps law enforcement agencies prevent and combat criminal activities.
