The proposals to reintroduce road tolls in Ghana through a totally digital system will eliminate manual collection and physical tollbooths, according to President John Dramani Mahama.
Instead, drivers and car owners would get automatic bills through their bank accounts or mobile money wallets based on information connected to their Ghana Cards.
President Mahama made this statement on Monday, May 26, 2025, while speaking to attendees of the 9th Ghana CEO Summit in Accra.
“We’ve already linked every car to its owner’s Ghana Card,” he said. “If you cross, for example, the East Legon Bridge, a camera captures your car, and a bill is sent straight to your MoMo or bank account. No tollbooths, no delays, just straightforward billing.”
The proposal, according to President Mahama, expands upon previous advancements in Ghana’s identity management system.
He mentioned a recent request for references on the local contractor that developed Ghana’s ID card system from officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“I told them Margins did a good job. This same infrastructure is what we are now using to modernise toll collection,” he said.
In 2021, the administration of the New Patriotic Party discontinued the previous toll system, which was dependent on manual collection at roadside booths.
Although tolling was favored by the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, President Mahama stated that the reintroduction will be entirely digital in order to prevent the traffic and inefficiencies that came with the previous model.
He pointed out that the new method will enhance compliance and lessen income leaks.
According to him, it was created to utilize the current national identification and financial platforms without causing commuters any inconvenience.
The digital toll effort, according to President Mahama, is a component of a larger plan to revitalize Ghana’s economy by leveraging efficiency and technology to enhance public services and build out infrastructure.
He clarified that the program is one of several steps his administration plans to take to boost funding for roads and other vital infrastructure and rebuild trust in economic management.
