The primary suspect, Kwame Ato Asare, also known as Kwame Ani, and three other people have been taken into custody by the police in connection with the attack on the Axim District Police patrol squad on March 9, 2023.
Eight people connected to the incident have now been detained.
Following the assault on the patrol squad, Kwame Ato Asare and the three other suspects—Williams Kwofie, Richard Kwesi, and Emmanuel Kojo Bronie—who were on the police’s radar—went into hiding.
On April 21, 2023, they were taken into custody at a village close to Enchi in the Western North Region.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau is currently looking into charges of extortion made by Kwame Ato Asare against the Axim District Police Commander, the Crime Officer, and other police officers in the district while he was in hiding (PPSB).
Kwame Ato Asare’s arrest is expected to help with the investigation into the claims, and any police officers found to be at fault, per the law enforcement agency, will go through the proper channels to get the appropriate punishment under the law.
