Effective March 5, 2024, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) will impose a strict salary freeze on public sector employees who do not possess a Ghana Card number.
The goal of this action is to get rid of phantom names and improve the government payroll’s legitimacy.
At an event in Accra to disclose the linkage of National Identification Authority (NIA) data to the CAGD payroll, Controller and Accountant-General Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompen made the announcement.
The importance of this measure in removing bogus entries from the government payroll was emphasized by Mr. Kwaning-Bosompen.
“All employees without Ghana Cards face the risk of not being paid on the government payroll as of March 24, this year,” he declared.
In order to prevent salary disruptions, Mr. Kwaning-Bosompen asked personnel in the public sector to register for their Ghana Cards at any NIA office across the country.
He did, however, clarify that the goal of this new modality is to improve the current processes and controls in order to guarantee a reliable database.
He restated, “The existing payroll controls and protocols are not being replaced by this linkage between the national payroll and NIA database.”
